Reports about vulnerabilities in connection with Wi-Fi networks have increased considerably in recent months. This is how to protect yourself when e-banking.

The latest Wi-Fi standard WPA3 had just been approved when already, there were concerns about its security. And this after about a year ago it transpired that practically no Wi-Fi device using the previous WPA2 standard was secure any longer. Recently, critical vulnerabilities in various current devices using the new technology have also emerged.

Should you use Wi-Fi for such critical applications such as e-banking at all now then? Well yes, for as long as you use a trustworthy network operator, and all devices are up-to-date, since connections with any financial institution are always established via additional end-to-end encryption independent from the Wi-Fi network.

When using Wi-Fi nets, you should still take additional measures to protect yourself though:

  • only making limited use of unknown WLANs or avoiding them altogether, if at all possible.
  • not using public WLANs for e-banking and generally never transferring any confidential data this way.
  • whenever possible only connecting to encrypted WLANs.
  • using a current encryption method (WPA) with a strong password for your own access point.
